Natural Mold Removal Products You Can Make Yourself

[ 0 ] July 23, 2010

There are dozens of mold removal products on the market. You can walk into any grocery or hardware store and find what you need. With so many options available, deciding what to use can be difficult. Even worse, some of the products contain harsh chemicals. You want to kill the mold, but you don’t want to choke yourself in the process. A solution is to use natural cleaning products. You can make these at home with common household products.

First, you should know that bleach does not kill mold. So if you think bleach will do the trick, you’ve got it wrong. Some ingredients that should work include tea tree oil, grapefruit seed extract and vinegar. All three of these items should be easy to find. Check your local grocery or health food store. These items might not work as quickly as a commercial cleaner, but they are better for your health.

Vinegar is the easiest ingredient to obtain. You probably already have some in your kitchen. It’s also the cheapest ingredient of the three. Genuine tea tree oil costs more, and will probably only be available from a health food store. It also has a strong scent that some people dislike. Grapefruit extract is also more expensive than vinegar, but it is odorless.

Vinegar Mixture

Vinegar has a million uses. Homeowners have used it for years to remove mold. You can use white distilled vinegar alone or mix it with water. Put the mixture into a spray bottle, saturate the moldy area, let it sit for an hour and then wipe it away. The smell is strong, but it doesn’t last too long.

Tea Tree Oil

If you can stand the smell, tea tree oil is known as a great mold removal ingredient. You mix a few teaspoons of the oil with at least one cup of water. Put the mixture into a spray bottle and shake it well. Spray the mixture directly onto the mold. Do not rinse the mixture off the wall. Let it sit for at least thirty minutes, and then wipe it away with a sponge or rag. Keep in mind that tea tree oil has a strong scent. It may take a day or two for the odor to subside. If you dislike the scent, use an alternate cleaning method.
Grapefruit Seed Extract

The only advantage of using grapefruit seed extract is the lack of scent. It doesn’t work any worse or better than the other items on the list. If you dislike strong odors, the grapefruit is the best choice. Mix twenty to twenty five drops of the extract into one or two cups of water. Add the ingredients to a spray bottle and spray the contaminated area. Let it sit for at least thirty minutes, then wipe it away with a sponge or cloth.

Mold removal products are readily available. If the products sold in stores don’t appeal to you, it’s possible to make your own. The mixtures mentioned in this article should do the trick.

Mold Removers Are Not All the Same

Mold Removers

Mold removers are vital when it comes to removing mold from your home and even outside of it. But, one of the biggest mistakes many homeowners make is to just grab any product to clean up the mold and then complain when it doesn’t do the job.

Most mold cleaners are not created equally. So while a bathroom cleaner may work on cleaning those moldy tiles, it probably won’t work on getting the mold out of your living room carpet.

In addition, not every product will be environmental friendly either. Some will be full of harsh chemicals while others will be made with all-natural ingredients that are safe for the environment.

And of course some mold removal products will be far more expensive than others, which of course is usually the very reason many homeowners just pick a product and go!

And yes, you may have to spend just a few extra dollars on an environmentally safe product, but in the end it will be worth it.

One of the biggest reasons you should choose a green product verses one that is made strictly from toxic chemicals is the very same reason you’re cleaning up the mold from your home in the first place, because they’re dangerous to your health and the environment you live in.

In fact, most chemicals can be far more dangerous than some molds and can cause your health issues themselves. Of course some types of mold can be extremely toxic and just as dangerous since they can cause respiratory failure, memory loss and in rare cases, death.

So why would you want to combine two very dangerous substances that could cause serious damage to your health?

So what it all comes down to is this. Maybe it’s time to use a mold removal product that not only is designed specifically for the job at hand, but also one that is all-natural and safe for the environment as well as your health.

And just because a product states that they‘re a safer alternative, don’t be fooled! Many manufacturers want you to believe that their products are up to standards with our greener world, when really they can get away with disguising their ingredients to make it seem like a safer alternative and still contain dangerous chemicals.

Always read the ingredient label. If you find that there are words in the list that you can’t pronounce, then chances are it’s not natural. If you can’t find an ingredient label for the product, check online for the product’s information. And if you’re just unsure of what mold clean up product is best for your situation, do a little online research.

There’s really nothing you can’t find online about mold and mold removal products (even some natural ones) that others haven’t already tried in situations that are probably similar to your own.

Once you have the right mold removers for the job, you can be sure it one take long to rid those molds out of your home once and for all.
