Hi there!

I find his article very useful since we just recently discovered black mold in our house. I'm not sure if we are experiencing any of the symptoms, but we definitely need to get rid of it fast!

I never realized just how harmful it can be. Especially because we have pets and small children running around... Great Info!

Thanks, Vlad

Hi, I noticed that when you mentioned mold removal companies you didn’t bother to mention using the phonebook. I know this should be a pretty obvious option but you’d be surprised at how many people don’t realize that you can find the sort of companies in your local Yellow Pages. I also know that you can always find a local company dealing in molds online. I live in an extremely small town were it’s possible to find a company that is willing to cleanup mold but you might not be able to find that company online since it’s a small mom and pop place.

Another overlooked option is to get to know the businesses in your town on a personal level. Become friends with the owners or managers and it’s a great way to find out what companies are legit for cleaning up mold problems. Businesses like restaurants have probably dealt with mold at one time or another so they are your best option. When all else fails if you live near bigger city check there. Sometimes these companies are willing to forgo the travel expenses if the job is worth their time and effort.

Cincinnati, I agree. But you don’t have to have a leaky roof to have mold in your home. The stuff in your refrigerator isn’t caused by a roof leak. Neither is the stuff growing on your house plant. And this article by the way is on mildew, which is not the same! :)

I have to admit however, I never knew that until a few years ago. I thought mildew and mold were the very same thing! Kind of scary knowing I might have been touching stuff that could have made me very sick. I also didn’t bother to clean it up because I didn’t think it was dangerous! I know there are a lot of products out there called mold and mildew removers, but I wonder how many people realize that there’s more than one type of mold? I hope they know! Most of the mildew I’ve found comes from my shower wall. Pretty common I think! I do like the idea of just making my own products for simple things like mildew. Much more economical and better for the environment. Baking soda is number one on my cleaning list! Love the stuff! It’s a good abrasive for clothes too!

I think this is a good article on how to prevent mold in the first place. Killing it is a whole other process. Yes, you can find a good commercial product to kill mold, but what are our other options? I’m a little bit of a green freak when it comes to cleaning. I learned about 6 years ago that I’m extremely sensitive to anything with bleach in it. You might read the labels of the commercial cleaners you’re considering if you’re sensitive to bleach or other strong chemicals. And a lot of time store bought products just tell you to spray and wipe. I’ve learned there’s a lot more to cleaning up mold than just that. However, it also depends on the type of mold! Mold growing in your fridge is not the same as the stuff growing on your wall or plant! I’ve seen it all! Yuck! One thing I do want to point out. Always, Always…wear gloves at the very least when you’re cleaning any type of mold, dangerous or not. My son is allergic to mold and it’s not a pretty picture to have him sneezing all day long because he’s touched the stuff or been around it.

I don’t know about you, but I believe that a mold test should be required when buying or selling an older home. It should also be required for landlords who want to rent out their homes. So many of us are unaware of just how deadly black mold can be. I remember as a child smelling must in the dark basement of the homes my parents rented, never knowing that the musty smell I was breathing in was mold! My father is also not sure that a mold problem growing in the basement of a home he rented a few years ago, wasn’t a part of the problem that caused my mother to have a weak immune system while she was fighting cancer. He wasn’t even sure that the cancer wasn’t caused by the molds because she had never had a history of cancer in her family and it was very sudden. I don’t believe entirely that the molds caused the cancer, but I do believe they did not help her cancer because her immune system was never strong. So I think it did attribute to it at least. I think readers should check with their city at the very least to see what kind of laws there are that involve testing of toxic molds in dwellings. You never know when it may help save a life.

Your photo for this article reminded me of the flooding that we had in Kansas several years ago. It reeked enough havoc that it caused many residents to lose their homes due to toxins from an oil spill and black mold. We required FEMA to come out and help although many residents were unsatisfied with the results. Also it was sad to see that because flooding is considered an act of mother nature many homeowners were not able to cover the loss of their belongings and home through their insurance company. I was lucky enough that the only flooding we had was about 3 feet of water standing in our basement and while it did cause black mold on your basement floor and walls it was an easy cleanup because the walls and floor were both made of cement. There is never enough information on how deadly black molds can be. There were a lot of sick people during the flooding. Whether it was from the oil spill or black molds we will never know, but I believe both were just as equally a part of the problem. Thank you for sharing this website and its valuable information to readers. It is very important that people know just how serious black mold can be.

This article contains exactly one line on how to actually kill/remove mold, "Stores sell mold cleaning products that contain ingredients that kill all types of fungi." Who would have guessed?

Article really deals with mold remediation which could be helpful information, but is not consistent with the title.
